The grey granite church decked with a red brick roof was constructed based on architect Lars Sonck's drawings and it was decorated by painters Hugo Simberg and Magnus Enckell.
The church, which took shape in the early years of 20th century, is revered as the ultimate monument of Finnish national romantic architecture. At the same time, it is an awe-inspiring testament to the skill of the builders and craftsmen who took part in its making. The cathedral's significance as a piece of architectural art was cemented in the spring of 2000, when its master plans were displayed in the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris.
As the main church of the cathedral parish, Tampere Cathedral hosts many local and national events and services, such as regular ordinations. It is particularly popular as a concert and wedding church. Today, the church holds slightly less than 2,000 seats.
